Hemp Cultivation Outperforms Pine Wood in Sustainability and Profit
Farmers are increasingly turning to hemp cultivation as a more sustainable and profitable alternative to pine wood. Hemp grows faster, requires fewer pesticides, and can be harvested multiple times a year, unlike pine trees, which take decades to mature. The environmental benefits are substantial, with hemp sequestering more CO2 and improving soil health. Sunshine Valley Farms in Oregon switched from pine wood to hemp in 2019 and has since seen a threefold increase in profits. Owner Paul Hendricks noted that hemp’s versatility in producing textiles, paper, and bioplastics has opened new revenue streams while reducing their carbon footprint. This shift underscores hemp’s potential to drive sustainable agricultural practices.
